Новая рубрика - "Читаем вместе".
Предлагаю вместе почитать книгу, которая прошла мимо меня в детстве. Я в те годы читала книги наподобие "Дети подземелья" и "Тимур и его команда". Справедливости ради замечу, что Тимура я любила (в отличие от детей).
Начну с "Аня из Зеленых Мезонинов". Оригинал и перевод  (Батищева М.)
Читаем чисто в ознакомительных целях и наслаждаемся. Только все самое интересное.

Во-первых, название.

A gable is the triangle formed by a sloping roof. A building may be front-gabled or side-gabled. Some houses are cross-gabled--They have gables both on the front and on the side. Porches and dormers may also be gabled.

 В переводе на русский - щипе́ц.

Мезони́н (итал. mezzanino — «промежуточный», которое идет к греческому «мезос» — «средний»), надстрой, вышка, полуярус, полужилье — надстройка над средней частью жилого дома, часто имеет балкон.

В переводе на английский -  Mezzanine.

 A particular type of yarn sold in stores and identified as such on the label. When it first came in, in the 1820s, this very soft yarn was used principally for weaving. What Mrs. Lynde makes is, strictly speaking, not a quilt but a bedspread. The common way of making such spreads with cotton or other thread is to knit squares on the bias and stitch them together, but Mrs. Lynde's quilt knitting involves elaborate lacy patterns. Montgomery herself knitted three such patterned quilts.

A knitted cotton counterpane (counterpane, bedspread and coverlet are synonyms) is composed of squares, triangles, stripes or other shapes of knitted pieces that are sewn together to make a bed-cover.

Sorrel (horse) - the term is usually used to refer to a copper-red shade of chestnut. Лошадь гнедая или все-таки рыжая? Вычитала, что у гнедой лошади темная грива.

Very green and neat and precise was that yard, set about on one side with great patriarchal willows and the other with prim Lombardies.

Lombardy poplar - тополь пирамидальный, или итальянский. Дерево мне знакомо, но не знала, что оно итальянское.

This had been done without her advice being asked, and must perforce be disapproved.

lobster cannery - завод, где консервируют омаров

Long ago, lobsters were so plentiful that Native Americans used them to fertilize their fields and to bait their hooks for fishing. In colonial times, lobsters were considered "poverty food." They were harvested from tidal pools and served to children, to prisoners, and to indentured servants, who exchanged their passage to America for seven years of service to their sponsors. In Massachusetts, some of the servants finally rebelled. They had it put into their contracts that they would not be forced to eat lobster more than three times a week.

Оказывается омаров было так много, что коренные жители Америки использовали их для удобрения полей и как наживку на рыбалке. В колониальные времена омары считались едой бедняков. Их подавали детям, заключенным и слугам, обусловленный договором сервитута (которые должны были 7 лет отработать). В Массачусетсе слуги взубновались ипотребовали вписать в конракты условие, что лобстеров они будут есть не более трех раз в неделю.

Home boy - земляк. Нашла информацию, что слово произошло от испанского слова hombre.
