Мой отзыв. Connie Brockway - Glad rags

Connie Brockway Glad rags (новелла) Сборник The True Love Wedding Dress Вступление: Новеллы с сборнике объединены волшебным подвенечным платьем, которое помогает героям найти счастье и исчезает таинственным образом. Оценка: Четыре с плюсом. Готова даже поставить 5. Потому, что понравилось. Но есть небольшие замечания. Совсем небольшие . Сюжет: Два года назад Алекс и Люси были почти помолвлены. Почти, потому что до официальных заявлений дело не дошло, но в грядущей свадьбе никто не сомневался. Накануне отъезда героя на Крымскую войну, он разрывает с невестой отношения, сделав несколько нелицеприятных замечаний в ее сторону. Сейчас они ведут себя при встрече как посторонние. И лишь выходка брата Люси может помочь им наладить отношения.

Мое мнение:

Пример того, как можно вместить в короткую новеллу полноценную историю.

Немного о сюжете:

Now back to Beguiling the Beauty, which is my contribution to the overpopulation of dukes in Romancedom.  This particular duke, in present-day terms, would be described as an evolutionary biologist--but since my book is set in 1896, he is just a plain, old naturalist.
Our naturalist duke has a not-so-minor obsession with a certain beauty he's only seen from afar.  This obsession bugs the ever-loving daylight out of him because he believes the twice-widowed Mrs. Easterbrook to be a money-grubbing, husband-dishonoring slut.  (And you can't really blame him, as her first husband railed against her in front of the duke shortly before the man died broke and under suspicious circumstances--read, suicide.)  The duke avoids Society because he isn't sure whether, even knowing her to be this money-grubbing, husband-dishonoring slut, he can trust himself around her light-bending beauty.  But he's getting old--almost 29, that is--and has promised his stepmother that after a lecture at Harvard University, he will look for a wife in London, where he is certain to run into Mrs. Easterbrook.

Думаю, что многие из нас были бы не против побывать на подобной встрече.
Писательницы рассказывали о книгах, творческих планах и об отношении родственников к их профессии.

- Широко известен факт, что вы  учились в Гарварде, когда сели за написание своего первого романа. И то, что размышляли о медицинском образовании, когда издали ваши первые романы. Но мало кому известно, что в начале девяностых вы писали для Let’s Go: Europe. Должно быть, было весело.

- Было потрясающе. Но не думаю, что смогу назвать ту работу веселой. Let’s Go: Europe – путеводитель для бюджетного путешественника. И чтобы убедиться, что он содержит самую достоверную и необходимую информацию, исследователей/писателей наделяют ограниченным бюджетом. Мне оплатили перелет и выделили тридцать два доллара на день, чтобы выжить на Крите и Кипре. Поверьте, тридцати двух долларов было мало даже в 1990. Я жила в молодежных хостелах, пережила инвазию блох и получила непристойное предложение от монаха.
