Выбрала новеллу незнакомого мне автора и не пожалела. Писательница вернулась к незавершенной серии о трех сестрах и ,наконец-то, через много лет дописала продолжение. Думаю, ее давних поклонников такой поступок лишь обрадовал. Жаль, что это только новелла, а не полноценный роман. Сюжет: Раньше оставшиеся сиротами сестры Эпплтон были вынуждены устраивать бутафорные спиритические сеансы, чтобы выжить. Сейчас шарлатанство осталось в прошлом. Старшие сестры удачно вышли замуж, а младшая Пенелопа готовится к дебюту. Девушка с нетерпением ждет свой первый бал. Ведь знает, что там встретит своего суженного. Пусть они с сестрами и устраивали раньше шарлатанские сеансы, Пенелопа на самом деле видит будущее. Но тщательно скрывает от родных свою тайну. На балу Пенелопа сразу узнает того, кто предназначен ей в мужья - это известный нью-йоркский адвокат и друг ее сестры, Джаред Мартон. И он также сражен наповал. Молодым людям бы радоваться да веселиться, но происходит невероятное: Пенелопа предвидит скорую гибель суженного.

Моё мнение:
Симпатичная новелла. Довольно живенькая. Пенелопа решает, что лучше не любить, чем потерять любимого. Она намерена не дать Джареду ни шанса. Герою пришлось постараться и заручиться поддержкой родных героини, лишь бы приблизиться к ней. Не обошлось без вмешательства родных, высшего света и закоренелых преступников. Не скажу, что герои прописаны идеально. Но неплохо для короткой повести. Пусть они и двухмерные, но читается их история легко. Есть к чему придраться, но не стану. Или все-таки стану? [smilie=girl_wink.gif] Странно ли желание Пенелопы изменить судьбу, отказавшись от суженного? Она попыталась его спасти - дважды посылала Джареду анонимную записку с просьбой уехать из города. Но то, как она беззаботно решила перекроить судьбу настораживает. Джаред в начале предстает, как самостоятельный уверенный мужчина, но когда в историю вмешались его родители, в его словах послышались какие-то жалостливые нотки. Угроза родителей лишить его наследства вызвала у него тревогу. Отдает каким-то инфантилизмом. Почему он сразу не сообщил родителям о намерении жениться, раз так был настроен ее завоевать? Почему уклонился от ответа, когда мать спросила о его отношениях с Пенелопой?
